Practice · Independent ETRM & CTRM consultants

ETRM & CTRM consulting: trading systems that fit the way your business trades.

Our independent ETRM and CTRM consultants help energy and commodity companies choose, implement and integrate trading and risk management platforms. We are 100% vendor-independent, so our only incentive is a system that works for you.

Our point of view

Most CTRM programmes don't fail on technology. They fail on fit.

Systems get chosen from a polished demo, integration is scoped late, and the people who must use the platform every day are consulted last. We start from your processes and work forward, so the system you buy is the one your business needs.

01
Process before product

We document how you really trade, hedge and settle before a single vendor is invited to present.

02
Integration designed from day one

Interfaces to finance, scheduling, market data and risk are planned up front, not discovered in testing.

03
Adoption built in

Business scenarios, user acceptance testing and training are part of the plan, so your team trusts the system at go-live.

Our approach

Four stages. Each answers a critical question.

Engage us for one stage or for the whole journey. Every stage produces tangible deliverables and a clear decision point, so you stay in control of scope, budget and pace.

01

As-is process assessment

Where are we today, and what will change deliver?

As-is process assessment

Our As-Is Assessment provides a comprehensive evaluation of your current CTRM/ETRM processes, systems and organisational structure. We analyse your existing processes, IT landscape, reports and output documents to build a clear, shared picture of how your business really trades, hedges, schedules and settles today.

The value to you
  • Avoid automating broken processes. We formalise and streamline how work is done before any software is chosen, so the new system supports your best practice rather than your workarounds.
  • A business case built on facts. We quantify the cost of today's inefficiencies and the return on investment of change, so your board approves a programme it understands.
  • Stakeholders aligned early. Front office, risk, operations, finance and IT agree on one view of the current state and the priorities for change.
  • Lower programme risk. Gaps, dependencies and change-management needs surface now, not halfway through implementation, reducing the risk of budget and schedule overruns.
02

RFP development & vendor selection

Which platform is right for us, and on what terms?

RFP development & vendor selection

In a crowded and complex market, choosing the right CTRM/ETRM solution can be daunting. Our RFP Development and Vendor Selection service guides you through every step, from defining what you need to finalising the contract.

The value to you
  • Objective analysis. A vendor-agnostic process means every solution is judged against your requirements, not a partnership agreement.
  • Comprehensive evaluation. Every critical requirement is tested, including the awkward edge cases that polished demos tend to skip.
  • Time and resource efficiency. Our templates, market knowledge and proven method shorten the selection cycle and protect your team's time.
  • Risk mitigation. Thorough due diligence, scripted demonstrations and reference checks mean an informed decision you can defend.
03

Functional & integration requirements

What exactly do we need, and can the vendor deliver it?

Functional & integration requirements

Requirements are where most CTRM/ETRM programmes are won or lost. We work with your team to define your ideal future-state processes, document every key process the software must cover, and capture the integration requirements that connect it to the rest of your business.

The value to you
  • Fewer surprises during build. Clear, validated requirements reduce change requests, rework and the cost of late discoveries.
  • Realistic scope, budget and timeline. Deployment, training, UAT, data migration and go-live are planned and agreed with the vendor up front.
  • Clear ownership. Every key process has a named owner, so decisions are made quickly and accountability is clear.
  • Out-of-the-box first. We maximise the use of standard vendor capabilities to reduce customisation, cost and upgrade risk.
04

Implementation, integration & support

How do we get there safely, and keep improving?

Implementation, integration & support

We collaborate with your vendor to create an implementation plan that addresses your unique functional, technical and resource needs, then help you deliver it. That includes the interfaces that integrate your new system with your existing applications, rigorous testing, and the training and documentation your people need.

The value to you
  • Minimal disruption. Cut-over and go-live are planned around your trading calendar and business peaks.
  • Integration that works. Interfaces are designed, built and tested against real business scenarios before go-live.
  • Users ready on day one. Training, documentation and user acceptance testing build confidence across front, middle and back office.
  • Sustainable value. Knowledge transfer and continuous improvement keep the system delivering long after the project team leaves.
FAQs

ETRM & CTRM consulting: common questions.

What is the difference between ETRM and CTRM?

ETRM (energy trading and risk management) systems focus on energy commodities such as power, gas, oil and emissions, including scheduling, nominations and energy regulation. CTRM (commodity trading and risk management) covers a broader range of commodities such as metals, agriculture and softs, with strong physical logistics, inventory and quality handling. Many platforms now serve both.

Why use an independent ETRM/CTRM consultant?

An independent consultant does not sell software, so recommendations are based only on your requirements. That means a fairer vendor selection, stronger negotiation and someone representing your interests during implementation.

How long does an ETRM or CTRM implementation take?

It depends on scope. A focused cloud deployment for a single commodity can take a few months, while an enterprise, multi-commodity programme with many integrations commonly runs for a year or more. A proper assessment and requirements phase is the best way to set a realistic plan.

Can you help if our implementation is already in trouble?

Yes. We regularly join programmes mid-flight to strengthen requirements, testing and governance, and to help recover programmes that are behind schedule or over budget.

Which ETRM/CTRM platforms do you work with?

Our team has hands-on delivery experience across Endur, Allegro, Aspect, TriplePoint and Quoreka, and we assess other platforms independently during selection.
